This leaves a substantial amount of recoverable natural resources unaccounted for, amounting to USD 62 billion, and exacerbates pollution risks.

The forecasted trajectory is equally concerning, with an annual increase of 2.6 million tonnes of e-waste, projected to reach a daunting 82 million tonnes by 2030. This surge in e-waste generation is attributed to factors such as technological advancements, increased consumption, limited repair options, shorter product life cycles, and society’s growing dependence on electronics.

Efforts to address this escalating issue are crucial. If countries can enhance e-waste collection and recycling rates to 60% by 2030, the benefits, including reduced health risks and environmental impact, would far outweigh the costs by over USD 38 billion. It is imperative to implement sound regulations and sustainable practices to manage e-waste effectively and mitigate its adverse effects on our planet and well-being.

The growing concern over e-waste underscores the urgent need for concerted global action to address this pressing environmental challenge and transition towards a more sustainable and responsible approach to managing electronic waste.
